Severe Acne: How do You Get Rid of Acne Cysts?

by Susan Lane

All types of acne can be divided into two categories, mild and severe. Some examples of mild acne are pustules, whiteheads and blackheads. Although in this article we are going to focus on one of the sever types of acne, cystic acne.

Cystic acne is the worst form of acne that a person can experience. It is more serious and damaging compared to other forms of acne such as pimples or whiteheads. This is caused by an infection in the inner layers of the dermis that stimulates the formation of nodules. Another denomination for this type of acne is acne vulgaris. When the pores get blocked due to the excess of sebum, acne cysts or acne nodules will appear on the skin. Our body fights the infection producing inflammation of the area where the pores have been blocked. When there are a lot of bacteria, the immune system reacts more powerfully; this often results in a larger size pimple, better known as an acne cyst.

This type of reaction causes the body to release sebum. Sebum in large amounts is harmful since the risk of a larger bacterial attack increases. Moreover, the excess of sebum on the skin helps increase the appearance of large pimples caused by greater inflammations, bacterial and an oil surplus.

Understanding Cystic Acne

Retention keratosis is another factor that can make facial cysts more severe. Retention is caused when dead skin cells are not properly released into the skin surface. Also, dead and damaged cells become an easy target for bacterial infections. If not treated, the infection can amplify in size and area which causes acne cysts to become more serious.

Another factor that may contribute to nodulocystic acne is hormones. Testosterone and androgen hormones can help to increase sebum levels. It is necessary that the sebum ducts be clear in order to prevent them from getting clogged and decreasing the risk of the cysts formation. The lifestyle and the genetic background of a person also influence the severity of acne. Stress behavior can contribute to or even increase acne.

Even though this type of acne is severe there are acne treatment products that can help heal acne cysts. A helpful option is an oral medication called Accutane. Its function is to shrink the oil glands which will lower the acne infections. Acne may be cleared with this product however some people who have taken Accutane experienced depression as a side effect. This medication should be taken only if all other methods have been exhausted.

Another treatment available is a cortisone injection which can be administered by a dermatologist. The injections provide instant relief of the area affected, reducing its redness and inflammation. Consequently, the pimple is reduced and thus becomes less visible. Some of the problems that may occur after receiving the injection are temporary skin discoloration and bleeding.

It may be difficult to cure cystic acne however it is not a lost cause. This type of acne requires a special acne skin care treatment since some could worsen the condition. Nowadays the market offers several natural options to treat cystic acne.
