Treating Brontophobia With Hypnosis And NLP

by Alan Densky

A great number of folks everywhere possess a fear thunderstorms, a common condition known as brontophobia. For as long as this fear has existed, people have been looking for methods to beat it. Currently there is a variety of treatment choices in use. To help defeat this phobia, professionals call for certain hypnosis techniques that are proven successful in dissipating fears and anxiety.

Brontophobia sufferers possess an irrational fear of storms. Loud, booming thunder and cracks of lightning can trigger nervousness and anxiety attacks in brontophobia sufferers. Other effects include a racing heart, perspiring, and an intense sensation of fear, to the point where a person becomes sick.

For many, the fear of lightning and thunder begins at a young age, when as children, we shiver under the covers during a serious storm. Brontophobia can be especially overwhelming for small children. Many scared children feel powerless during a thunderstorm, and their parents may also feel unable to relieve their anxieties.

In spite of its frequency in children, brontophobia can develop at any time, frequently after someone has an experience such as getting a static shock, which recalls a flash of lightning. A stressful event such as living through a tropical storm can also create a phobia of storms.

Many people may come to associate loud sounds, the feeling of discomfort, or terror with rainy weather, which can lead to a full-blown phobia. This fear is so common that it's even apparent in many animals; for example, many people report that their pet cats seem scared in lightning.

Phobia sufferers try to avoid seeing or hearing storms. They may experience anxiety during disasters such as hurricanes. This can threaten them if they are unable to function under circumstances which requires them to remain calm and react rationally.

Phobia sufferers frequently dread storm season, often suffering in summer when storms are common. They might continually check weather conditions and behave extra cautiously during periods of inclement weather. To other people, these actions may seem obsessive and paranoid. People with brontophobia may find this condition gradually taking over their lives.

There are many options available for treating brontophobia and other irrational fears. Notable ones include talk therapy, anti-anxiety medication, and hypnosis. Hypnosis tends to deliver safer, faster results and it is also non-invasive, having no negative side effects. For these reasons and more, hypnosis has become a widely used treatment.

Hypnosis is highly effective as a class of stress-relief therapy and has traditionally been used to achieve relaxation. By starting with relaxation techniques, hypnosis helps tense, nervous phobia patients initiate the process of overcoming their fears. When an individual is feeling tranquil, it is easier for hypnosis techniques to guide the unconscious into a fear-free line of thought.

The vast majority of phobias are connected to negative triggers, which become associated with fear inside the unconscious mind. For brontophobia sufferers, the rumble of thunder, the flash of lightning, or even the smell of rain often triggers alarm. Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) work at the unconscious level of the mind to disconnect fear from these triggers to deliver significant phobia relief. One of the most successful techniques is called the NLP Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation.

Ericksonian hypnosis is a type of hypnosis that is frequently used to treat fear-related stress. Named after pioneering developer, Dr. Milton Erickson, MD, this type of approach uses indirect suggestions integrated in stories, conversation, and metaphors to treat a phobia. Indirect suggestions are more effective than conventional post-hypnotic direct suggestions because people tend to reject direct orders. Those which indirectly communicate to conscious thought are much better able to empower people to vanquish their phobias.

Ericksonian hypnosis and NLP techniques have an additional advantage over traditional hypnosis programs because they are formulated to work for any phobia. So one program is effective for treating any phobia, or even several phobias if need be. Additionally, each program uses a variety of techniques to be effective for any individual.

Hypnotherapy is an ideal treatment option for many, which delivers quick and permanent results. Shivering under blankets and feeling frightened is not how a brontophobia sufferer should have to live. With hypnosis and NLP techniques, nearly everyone can overcome this irrational fear.
