Agoraphobia Treatment With NLP & Hypnotherapy

by Alan B. Densky, CH

Out of all the phobias in existence, agoraphobia is truly one of the most debilitating. It arises from an irrational fear of unfamiliar or potentially uncomfortable situations, and can grow to the point where a sufferer only feels safe inside their home. If you struggle with agoraphobia, you don't need to let this affliction control your life. You can learn about this disorder and learn how to beat it by using hypnotherapy.

The word agoraphobia means "fear of the marketplace," but people may feel terrified in any area where there is a crowd. These situations are usually public locations or unfamiliar areas away from the home. Sufferers may be afraid of spending time in shopping centers, lines, restaurants, airplanes, or any situation where they might not feel completely safe.

People with agoraphobia are scared of having panicky feelings or anxiety attacks in a setting where it would be difficult or impossible for them to get away. Agoraphobics usually lead happy and normal lives in the places where they are comfortable, even visiting with guests and conducting business from the safety of their own homes. Unfortunately, the phobia can be so serious that sometimes the afflicted will only feel safe in extremely confined spaces. One recent case in the news revealed a woman whose anxiety was so extreme that she refused to leave her bathroom for several months, suffering several negative health effects as a result.

Agoraphobia often stems from other panic disorders and irrational fears. For example, sufferers of social phobia frequently have agoraphobia also because they are afraid of having to interact with others. It may also result from traumatic incidents such as experiencing an accident outside of the home. Veterans of war frequently develop the phobia along with post-traumatic stress disorder. It affects people of either gender, although it is thought that agoraphobia is more common amongst women.

People with agoraphobia might feel that they risk humiliating themselves if they go out in public and experience an anxiety attack. It can be humiliating for a phobia sufferer to have symptoms such as shaking, sweating, or nervous breakdowns and lose their self-control.

Agoraphobia is usually treated with counseling or medication. Agoraphobia can be quite difficult to treat because sufferers may have other anxiety disorders and underlying causes for their anxieties.

The reason why people with phobias cannot seem to control their fears is because their feelings are rooted at the unconscious level. No amount of conscious effort or willpower is entirely sufficient to suppress a fear that comes from this level within the mind.

Hypnosis techniques used in Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) are effective on phobias because they work at the unconscious level of the mind. Hypnotherapy is a great treatment option because it is non-invasive and safe, with no unhealthy side effects.

There are Ericksonian hypnosis and NLP programs available on CD that are remarkable because they can treat any phobia, or even multiple phobias. It is not necessary to use a program that specifically treats each different phobia. This is because a good program will work on the thought process that causes every phobia. This makes this sort of program ideal for many agoraphobic people.

A good multi-session program will provide a variety of techniques, which will make the program effective for nearly every user. Using a step-by-step process, people can overcome their phobias with relative ease.

The first step in the hypnotherapy program is becoming calm and relaxed. As a form of therapy, hypnosis has traditionally been used for anxiety-relief, helping even the most stressed-out people feel calm and relaxed. Once an individual feels free of anxiety, NLP techniques eliminate a phobia by altering the single thought process that causes it.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy is an innovative form of hypnotherapy that uses suggestions embedded in a conversation, metaphor, or story to treat a phobia. Ericksonian hypnotherapy works more effectively than conventional hypnosis because the unconscious mind finds it harder to resist suggestions that are not obvious, than simple direct suggestions. Unlike direct suggestions, which merely "tell" your unconscious what to do, suggestions that are found in metaphors and stories will direct your unconscious into a positive, stress-free thought process.

People who are too anxious to step outside their door can regain their confidence and freedom by trying hypnotic techniques. A program with Ericksonian hypnotherapytechniques and NLP techniques is ideal for people who want to beat their fears permanently. Hypnotherapies produce a tremendous benefit for sufferers of agoraphobia and other phobias.
