Acne vulgaris can be classified as either mild, moderate or severe acne. And even though severe forms of acne are rare, they can cause a great deal of problems to the acne sufferer. Each type of acne is different and requires a different type of treatment.

Treatment for Mild to Moderate Acne Vulgaris

Mild and moderate acne vulgaris can be treated by following a regular cleansing routine. Here are some tips that may help:

Cleansing

When cleansing your skin, use a soapy cleanser that contains sulfur or salicylic acid. Both ingredients can help regulate the amount of sebum in the skin. As a matter of fact, salicylic acid can penetrate the pores and help unclog them from within.

Toning & Exfoliating

You should only use a toner (oil-free) if your cleanser does not removed all of the debris on your skin. However, if the cleanser is able to eliminate all the excess debris, you can skip the toner. Exfoliate once a week (more if you are in your forties).

Moisturizing

Moisturize with an oil-free, non comedogenic product. Don't skip this step as dehydrated skin will elevate the production of sebum. If your sebum production increases, so will your chances of experiencing acne breakouts.

Acne Creams

To treat stubborn areas you should use an acne treatment cream that contains salicylic acid or retinol. Retinol will help improve cell turnover and reduce your chances of getting acne breakouts.

Severe Acne Vulgaris

Severe acne vulgaris is characterized by the appearance of nodules or cysts. Nodules are larger and more painful than cysts because they develop underneath the skin's surface and can last for months.

Cysts are soft lesions similar to nodules. Just like nodules, cysts usually lead to scarring. This type of acne is often referred to as cystic acne.

Severe Acne Treatment

Cystic acne treatment usually requires intralesional cortisone shots to help dissolve nodules and cysts. It is also very important that you follow a basic cleansing routine if you want to treat this type of acne condition.
