Acne Health: How to Deal with Oily Skin

by Sabina Carvalho

Acne is one of the biggest problems for people with oily skin. Since oily skin produces more sebum than other types of skin, it has a greater tendency to develop clogged pores and acne infections. The key to controlling blocked pores and breakouts is to control the sebum in the skin.

The right cleansing routine can help treat cases of mild and moderate acne. If you have severe forms of acne (cystic acne, acne fulminans, etc) you should seek the help of a professional. Both of these types of acne require the use of antibiotics and prescription acne creams.

Step 1: Cleansing Oily Skin

If you have oily skin you can use a soapy cleanser. However, stay away from soaps because they can dry out your skin and are in no way comparable to soapy cleansers. In fact, the drier your skin is the more likely it is to break or crack and let in acne bacteria.

Using a soapy, gel cleanser is great for your acne skin type, especially if it contains acne fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid or retinol. Both of these ingredients can help stabilize the production of sebum, balance the rate of cell shedding, and keep debris from clogging the pores.

If you prefer using a natural acne remedy, you can make a milk of magnesia mask at home. This will help remove excess sebum immediately and is quite simple to apply. All you have to do is rub the product in and rinse it off with warm water.

Step 2: Tone and Exfoliate

If your cleanser does what it is supposed to, you won't need a toner, although, if you feel that there is still residue on your face, then you can use a toner to remove it. Just make sure that it is alcohol free.

Exfoliating, on the other hand, is something that should be an integral part of your daily skin care routine. Depending on your age and the state of your skin, you should exfoliate at least once a week. To exfoliate simply choose a scrub or use a product that contains salicylic acid.

A scrub is any mechanical exfoliant that you can find, while salicylic acid is a chemical exfoliant. Both types of products are a good option, but which you choose will depend on your preferences.

Step 3: How to Moisturize Oily Skin

You might think that oily skin doesn't need to be moisturized, but you're wrong. The problem with oily skin is an excess of oil, not moisture. While keeping this in mind, make sure that you find a moisturizer that is oil-free and apply it twice a day.

Step 4: Spot Treatment for Acne Pimples

Spot treatment is a vital part of any acne remedy regime. There are times when you can be consistent with your skin care routine, and still end-up with an occasional pimple. This is why you need an acne cream to treat specific problem areas.
