Omega 3: Preventing Attention Deficit Disorder

The many health benefits of omega 3 fats are apparent if you have followed health and nutritional news. Although most fats are considered to be detrimental to your health, omega 3 fats have been shown to improve ones health. Some areas in which they improve ones health is arthritis, heart rate, cholesterol levels, dementia, and recent research has shown it to help with attention deficit syndrome as well.

There are a lot of polyunsaturated fats found in food like Omega 3 fats. Alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA), EicosaPentaenoic acid (EPA), and DocosaHexaenoic acid (DHA) are the three main varities of Omega 3 fats. Among the three, DHA has positive effect on attention deficit disorder.

Recent research at the University of Purdue, has found a link between attention deficient disorder and a child's diet that is lacking in a fatty acid called DHA. The children's diets that lacked DHA showed the classic symptoms of ADD, such as behavior issues and hyperactivity. Because DHA is transmitted through breast milk infants are at risk for ADD as well. They believe that at least 85% of women in America are not digesting enough DHA to pass along to their children.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to get more of these useful fats into your system. The first way is to add foods rich in these nutrients to your diet. Some of these foods include fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, and tuna. Other sources include flax and walnuts. Increasing your intake of any or all of these foods will help with any deficiencies in your diet.

If you do not wish to change your diet that drastically or do not like any of the above foods, supplements are available. To produce noticeable benefits, you can usually find these in the form of fish oil supplements which contain omega-3 fats. By taking supplements, you reap all the fish oil benefits without the taste or hassle of the DHA-rich foods.

Thousgh scientists and nutritionists know a great deal about the benefits of Omega 3 fats, the research is only begun. Still there are plenty of exciting new frontiers to be explored. Indeed, a new benefit of Omeg 3 fats comes to light every day. The most recent finding is about their effect on attention deficit disorder, a cause to celebrate

Fish oil benefits pregnant women as its rich in fat which is needed for infants. The uses of fat in your diet are many as mentioned. So a little fat in your diet is always needed. A through research is going on to know more advantage of the fat. But finally a good amount of fat in your diet helps not only in preventing disease but also keeps you healthy.
