Behind the Scenes Goth Style

by Sydney Jaclyn

Goth style is first and foremost about freedom of expression and portraying one's individuality. Not surprisingly, the Goth lifestyle is very popular with teens. However, you'll often find people in their twenties or older embracing it too. Make-up, accessories, hair, and clothing are main aspects for defining this style.

The most common aspect of clothing associated with Goth fashion is the use of all- or mostly-black outfits, usually combined with distinct accessories, such as fishnet or velvet tights and heavy pewter jewelry. Now while black is still the ruling color of all colors when it comes to Goths, dark or even bright jewel tones are coming into the scene to add a feel of punk rock. That's the subculture the Goth style came from.

Another important part of the Goth style is hair. As the part of the body most easily adapted to style and expression, it has a lot of potential and can be worn in endless ways. Dyeing one's hair or wearing a wig is common amongst Goths.

Colors vary widely, ranging anywhere from black to pink, but typically the hair is limited to a single flat color... or else a color that contrasts sharply with big highlights. "Subtle" is not a word that applies to Goth hairstyles. Anything from shaved heads, blunt cuts, bobs, angled cuts, and Mohawks are acceptable in Goth fashion. All of these hair styles may be worn by girls, boys, men or women.

Goth style make-up also includes a lot of black. Look into a Goth make up kit and you will probably find dark mascara, black liquid eye liner, and even black lipstick in there. Wearing make-up to enhance one's originality is something done by men and women alike. A white foundation or cheek color is often used to create contrast, and some Goths will add some color in the form of dark red lipstick or colored false lashes.
